The Federal Reserve is calling on Congress to ban merchant banking, in which banks acquire stakes in companies rather than lend to them. Banking industry groups, including FSR, said regulators had not provided a proper analysis or justification for the change, calling the recommendations “unfortunate and ill-considered.”
